George Rodway Poulton(1828 – 1867)
This English musician and composer was born George Rodway Poulton on 16 October 1867 in Wiltshire, England. He emigrated to the United States of America when his parents Charles and Hannah Poulton moved to Lansingburgh, New York. After having an affair with a young student, he was tarred and feathered. George Poulton composed the tune "Aura Lea" in 1861, which went on to become one of the 19th century's most popular songs and a famous American Civil War song.
