He found employment as a singer in various lodge halls in his early career, in ferry boat lounges, in saloons, and even in the athletic clubs between bouts. During the Spanish-American War, Edwards met the lyricist Will Cobb while entertaining soldiers at Camp Black, they formed "Words and Music," a partnership that lasted many years. He founded the Gus Edwards Music Hall in New York City, as well as his own publishing company finally retiring in 1939.
